June 25-July 22-Aug 26, 2023 10:30am - Thurman's The Inward Journey

Updated: Jul 8, 2023

Dear Engaged Spirituality Family,

On Sunday July 22 (10:30 AM-PT, 11:30 AM-MT, 12:30 PM-CT, 1:30 PM-ET), Engaged Spirituality will continue discussion of The Inward Journey by Howard Thurman.

Here is a CORRECTED LINK to the book we are reading - The Inward Journey

(and NOT For the Inward Journey.) Apologies to anyone who bought the other book. Our July 22 discussion will center around BOTH books.

Here are some excerpts from The Inward Journey:

From #7: “Often it is most difficult to accept our fact…Often more difficult than to accept our fact is to learn to deal with our fact…We must learn to live with our fact, to domesticate it, and make of it a friend. In all ages people have found in religion, access to God who companions them in such struggles, giving not only comfort and reassurance, but also strength and courage. To discover this is to say, ‘Yes’ to life.”

From #20: “It is a strange freedom to be adrift in the world without a sense of anchor anywhere…To be known, to be called by one’s name, is to find one’s place and hold it against the hordes of hell. This is to know one’s value, for one’s self alone…It is to live a life that is one’s very own…it is to worship a God who is one’s very own.”

From #46: “It is important to make the full conquest of one’s life pattern to the end that one’s deeds will flow more and more from the center of one’s intent…Meditation and prayer are helpful in providing the climate in which one’s deeds may be exposed and the character of the deeds understood. In such a climate, the most natural desire of the heart is the quiet utterance to God: ‘Let not my will be set to sin.’”

From # 65: “Grace knows no bars. There is no loss that binds; Requirement, duty, balanced deeds are strangers here. The heart pours forth what it cannot hold, A living spirit of purest love.”

From # 74: “To be God’s child, to love with steady mind, with fervent heart, this is to know The Truth that makes one free.”

From # 81: “One can become at home, within, by locating in one’s own spirit the trysting place where one and one’s God may meet; for it is here that life becomes private without being self-centered, that the little purposes that cloy may be absorbed in the Big Purpose that structures and redefines, that the individual comes to oneself, the wanderer is home.”

From # 87: “The degree to which our imagination becomes the angelos of God, we ourselves may become God’s instruments.”

From # 107: “Always I know that Another sees and understands – Every vigil with me keeps watch – the door through which God comes no one can shut. God is the door”
