More Resources:

On June 23rd, when the discussion focused on the preface and first five chapters of The 1619 Project, the following resources were suggested as participants lamented "being played" both by history taught and/or neglected and currently by politicians and the media.

  1. Melvin: The Care of Souls: Cultivating a Pastor's Heart by Harold L. Senkbeil. Practical wisdom and Godly habits.

  2. Jonalu: The Half Has Never Been Told:Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism by Edward E. Baptist

  3. Eileen: The 1619 Project: Born on the Water by Nikole Hannah-Jones and Renee Watson. A picture book that chronicles the consequences of slavery and the history of black resistance in the United States.

  4. Bryan: Reveal Podcast: 40 Acres and a Lie Part 1. Historical investigation found 1,250 enslaved Black Americans who were given land only to see it returned to their enslavers. Podcast

  5.  Rosemary: Debunking the 1619 Project-Exposing the Plan to Divide America by Mary Grabar, an opposing view of the history examined in the 1619 Project. Rosemary is reading it because she wants to understand how history is seen by folks with a view of slavery and our national origin story that is opposite of Hannah-Jones'.

  6. Gil: Although Gil was unable to join the conversation due to a prior engagement, he invited the group to check out his new book, Diversity Without Dogma by Crosby Gilmore, a scientific approach to battling individual and systemic racism.

  7. Olivia mentioned the importance of the philosophy, foundation and development of "Black/African-inspired Psychology" and recommends the following suggestions:

    1. The seminal classic The Mis-Education of the Negro, by Carter G Woodson

    2. Black Psychology, 3rd edition, (1991), Reginald L. Jones, editor, Cobb & Henry Publishers; this volume includes chapters by founders of the Association of Black Psychologists, Black clinicians and academics whose thinking inspired the emergence of an African-inspired study of the mind, mentacide, the African mindset and worldview prior to the Ma'afa (Transatlantic Slave Trade) and colonization; the ensuing disruption; the aftermath (what was salvaged and what was not salvaged); the systemic and ongoing disruption; and the process for healing, reclamation and restoration.

    3. Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire; foundational must-read used by organizers, activists, educators, truth-seekers, et al....
